Join The Opera Buffs and The Opera League of Los Angeles for a special evening with Grammy Award-winning tenor Joshua Guerrero, an Opera Buffs alumnus whose remarkable career has taken him from Los Angeles to the world’s leading opera stages.
Mr. Guerrero is a graduate of the Young Artist Program and recipient of the Eva and Marc Stern Artist Award at LA Opera, second prize-winner in the Operalia Competition, a Richard Tucker Foundation Career Grant recipient, and a GRAMMY Award winner for LA Opera’s recording of Ghosts of Versailles (Best Opera Recording). Film and television credits include the Academy Award™ winning animated feature film Coco by Disney/Pixar.

WHEN: Houston Grand Opera presents Susannah by Carlisle Floyd
A deeply American masterpiece, Susannah, launches HGO’s 2026-27 season, continuing the company’s centenary celebration of opera icon Carlisle Floyd. Set in the hills of Tennessee and inspired by Floyd’s own roots as a minister’s son, the story follows Susannah, a young woman whose life is shattered after she’s seen bathing in a creek by church elders, leading to cruel gossip, judgment, and finally, her harrowing assault.
Shared through a genre-blending score infused with revival hymns and Appalachian folksong—and a libretto, also by Floyd, written in colorful regional dialect—the opera will be presented in a new staging from celebrated soprano-turned-director Patricia Racette.
Featuring Angel Blue as Susannah; Rod Gilfry as Reverend Olin Blitch; Billie Bruley as Sam; Aaron Blake as Little Bat. Maestro James Gaffigan conducts.

Joshua’s Boots tells the story of a Black teenager who flees his home to find new opportunity in the American West in 1878. Joshua overcomes racial prejudice and obstacles to become a cowboy, establishing a new life with his own land, his own name, and his own legacy. Recommended for ages 10 and up.
