Julie Todaro (Florida), Immediate Past President and In-School Opera Producer for the Young Patronesses of the Opera, led Opera Volunteers International members attending May 6, 7 and 8, 2011 – “Sunny Days and Balmy Nights” in Miami.

Julie and the YPO, together with Florida Grand Opera (celebrating their 70th anniversary), The Guild of Florida Grand Opera, Crescendo Circle and The Opera Society, hosted a flawless OVI Focus meeting at the Marriott Biscayne Bay. Preceding the OVI board meeting on Friday, the Hispanic-American Lyric Theater (established in 1987) performed a number of operetta, opera and zarzuela works.

After the board meeting, the “Opera Preview” dinner and performance from FGO’s Young Artists was catered beautifully by YPO volunteers at the magnificent home of Margarita and Henry Courtney in Miami Beach overlooking the InterCoastal Waterway. All the recipes selected had been featured in the YPO cookbook “Sunny Days and Balmy Nights”.

Saturday’s YPO Teacher Opera Workshop and exclusive backstage tour of the Adrienne Arsht Center could not have been more informative and impressive. FGO’s Cyrano and Don Giovanni with pre-opera lectures capped off the perfect weekend. OVI members even met Cyrano composer, David DiChiera.

The Miami city tour and “After Opera I love Chocolate” Dessert Party overlooking the Biscayne Bay was a perfect time to wish all those attending a safe trip home and a Happy Mothers Day!

On behalf of Opera Volunteers International, hats off, kudos, gracias and Bravi! to YPO’s Julie Todaro and OVI’s Mary Svela (Oregon) as well as OVI’s VP Marketing, Walter Briggs (New York) for making “Sunny Days and Balmy Nights” so successful.

Julie Benson, OVI President
