WHAT: Toledo Opera presents Bizet’s Carmen.
Bizet’s sizzling epic of dark passion, Carmen, tells the story of a fierce woman who lives life on her own terms – and the men who can’t let her go. Don José, a soldier drawn into her orbit, abandons everything for Carmen’s love, only to find himself consumed by jealousy when her attentions shift to the dashing bullfighter, Escamillo.
With its twisting tale of romance, deceit, and disaster set to magnetic melodies, Bizet’s masterpiece, Carmen, has become one of the world’s most popular operas. Featuring some of the most popular music to ever grace the opera stage, Carmen brings every aspect of Bizet’s thrilling tale to life, from its tantalizing beginning to its devastating climax. Under the baton of Adam Turner, Toledo Opera’s vibrant original production is not to be missed.

Starring Lisa Marie Rogali as Carmen, Brendan Boyle (Tosca and Ragtime) as Don José, and Joshua Jeremiah (Ragtime) as Escamillo.

WHAT: The University of Alabama Opera Theatre presents Gilbert and Sullivan’s Cox and Box, and Dan Shore’s The Beautiful Bridegroom.
Cox and Box: Sergeant Bouncer, an old soldier, has a scheme to get double rent from a single room. By day he lets it to Mr. Box (a printer who is out all night) and by night to Mr. Cox (a hatter who works all day). His plan works well until Mr. Cox is, unexpectedly, given a day’s holiday and the two lodgers meet. Left alone while Bouncer sorts out another room, they discover they share more than the same bed. Cox is engaged to the widow Penelope Ann Wiggins – a fate that Box escaped by faking his death. When news arrives that Penelope was lost at sea, the men’s cordial relationship turns into a comical battle for an inheritance, disinheritance, and a curious twist of fate.

The Beautiful Bridegroom, a one-act comic opera for six women, has been hailed as “a little masterpiece” by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer David Del Tredici. Based on an 18th-century play by Ludvig Holberg, this Mozart pastiche tells the story of a widow who has been searching for a young husband – not for her two marriageable daughters, but for herself.

WHAT: Nashville Opera presents The Shining. Based on the novel by Stephen King.

Deep in the shadows of the Colorado Rockies and miles from where anyone can hear you scream; the Overlook Hotel awaits. For its new caretakers, the Torrance family, the only thing more unnerving than their profound seclusion and solitude is the realization that they are not the hotel’s only guests.

While his young son with a sixth sense endures this house of horrors, Jack faces demons – past and present, real and imagined – that ultimately turn him into a monster. What started as a desperate search for financial (and marital) sanctuary now spirals out of control and sinks into a terrifying struggle for sanity and survival. Based on Stephen King’s best-selling novel, The Shining features music as beautiful and haunting as the story is horrifying.
