Volunteers from OVI Support Group member The Opera League of Los Angeles were out in full force during the recently held 2010 Opera America Conference hosted by Los Angeles Opera, June 9-12, 2010.  The OA conference focused on “New Realities” and “New Strategies” in these challenging times and it was held in conjunction with LA Opera’s first staging of Wagner’s complete Ring Cycle.

OLLA volunteers assisted in many ways at the Ring Festival. They were extremely successful selling opera-related merchandise at the boutique in the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion.  The money raised is for opera education for children in Los Angeles. In addition, OLLA’s Edmund Shaff chaired concierge services, providing tourist information in many languages, and OLLA’s Bob Bernard (Chairman of Artist Services) and his team provided transportation for all artists and their families.

OVI’s president, Julie Benson, got a chance to see the vibrant LA guild in action ahead of the OVI Conference in Los Angeles in September.

In attendance at the OA Conference from the Opera Volunteers International board were Vice President of Membership Rhonda Sweeney (Houston), Vice-President of Outreach Gerald Elijah (Los Angeles) and President Julie Benson (Chicago).  Rebecca Bowne (Los Angeles), Chairman of the upcoming OVI Conference, attended and played an important role leading the boutique efforts and hosting guests from many parts of the world.
